Rituals

Pre-teaching rituals that I use to help hit the “reset” button before instructing a class.

  1. Dirty Mouth? Clean it up!: Brushing my teeth before class allows me to take two minutes to breathe, look in the mirror, and set the intention for the next few hours. This helps me focus and find clarity before getting in front of a class.

  2. Plan warm-up/conditioning: Setting time to write out warm-ups and conditioning before class helps to correlate specific exercises and techniques to skill sets taught in class, which in turn, makes the content more meaningful to students.

  3. Tidy the studio: I strive to spend 5-10 minutes cleaning before students arrive. This quick tidy helps me feel organized and proud of the space where students will be learning and allows the students to focus on the content.

  4. Review lesson plan: I always take 2-3 minutes to review my previously written plan. I am never afraid to refer to my notes, but I have found that being familiar with the lesson’s overall layout helps boost student confidence in me as an instructor and improves the overall flow of the lesson.

  5. Affirmation: Before each class, I try to recite, read, or write out a quick mantra before class. Students are coming to learn from me! Being present and providing the best lesson possible for my students, is all that I can do.

I can think of 1,000 more ways to get ready for a class, but these work for me!

How do you get ready to instruct a class? How do you prepare to take a class? Pop over to my IG and leave a comment on your pre-class rituals!
